Dr. Abayomi T. Oshin began his career as the first African
Chartered Physiotherapist, trained at London School of Physiotherapy.
Career: After passing the Senior
Cambridge School Certificate Examination (December 1946) and the University of
London Matriculation examinations (June 1947), he was employed as a draughtsman
at Lands and Survey Department, Lagos. He worked there from 1947 until 1950. On
April 1950, he enrolled at the London School of Physiotherapy. He qualified as
a Chartered Physiotherapist in January 1954. Being the first African to qualify
in the profession, he was invited by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
London to broadcast to West Africa on “The Value of Physiotherapy“ on 21th,
October 1954. In 1969 he was conferred with the Bachelor of Physical Therapy
degree by the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada after successfully
completing the Medical Rehabilitation course and passing the requisite
examinations. In 1973, Dr. Oshin was appointed Lecturer/Consultant in
Physiotherapy by the University of Ibadan and University College Hospital,
Ibadan respectively. In 1977, he was promoted as Senior Lecturer. The
University of Ibadan also conferred the Master of Philosophy degree (1982) and
the Doctor of Philosophy degree (1986) on him. His research for the degrees was
on POLIOMYELITIS.
As a student and qualified physiotherapist, he gained experience
in several teaching and specialist hospitals in London and environs. He was
employed to be in sole charge of the Physiotherapy Department (evening clinics)
at the St. Nicholas Hospital, Plumstead, London. He thus became the first
African to be saddled with such a responsibility in his chosen profession. Abayomi
returned to Nigeria in December 1954 to be employed as a Physiotherapist at the
University Collage Hospital, Ibadan on 10th January 1955. He rose through the
ranks to become the head of the Physiotherapy Department in 1966. In the same
year the University of Ibadan also appointed him as an Associate Lecturer so
that he could assist with the commencement of the B.Sc. (Physiotherapy) degree
course. He found the assignment to be easy because of the experience he had
acquired in the teaching of physiotherapy at the school of Physiotherapy,
King’s College Hospital, now at Kings’ College, University of London (1963-65).
He had traveled many parts of the world in the interest of his profession.
Amongst the countries visited were the United Kingdom, United States of
America, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Israel, Egypt, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe,
Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and others. He is a member of several national and
international professional associations and societies. Several publications in
reputable journals are to his credit and articles on different topics in the
Nigerian newspapers. He was an exchange Physiotherapist to the United States of
America under the sponsorship of the U.S government (1958-59). He obtained the
covetous Scout Wood Badge at Gilwell Park, London in 1954. He was co-founder of
the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (1959); pioneer of University based
Physiotherapy Education in Nigeria (1966); President, Nigeria Society of
Physiotherapy (1970-72); Secretary-General, Africa Physiotherapy Organization
by election in Cairo (1980); Member of the British Association of Sports and
Medicine; Member of the Nigerian Society of Physiotherapy, Member of Canadian
Physiotherapy Association; Secretary in Nigeria of the International Society
for the Welfare of the Cripples; Honorary Consultant Physiotherapist to the
NEPA Hospital, Kainji, New Bussa (1975-78) and many others.
